Ventura County Landmark No. 98: Wiltfong House

Historical Background

Described as “Modest Victorian,” the Wiltfong house was constructed in 1894 completely of redwood and has been very well preserved and maintained over the years. The building has seven rooms in addition to bathrooms, twelve-foot ceilings, an attic, and a basement—the only basement in a house in Port Hueneme.

Cleve Wiltfong and his wife Marguerite bought the house in 1920. According to the Ventura County Star-Free Press (as cited in Find a Grave®, 2024), “Mr. Wilfong was the first superintendent of the Port Hueneme sanitary district, retiring from that position in 1947. Prior to that time he had been a blacksmith and a foreman for the Hueneme Wharf and Warehouse Co. Records show that the first marriage license issued in the present Ventura county courthouse was that for Mr. Wilfong and Miss Marguerite Hayward, also of Port Hueneme. The date was Aug. 13, 1913.” Mr. Wiltfong passed away in 1956 at his residence at 147 E. Pearl street, adjacent to the Wiltfong house.
