The Ventura County Environmental Health Division, in partnership with Ventura County Public Health, continues to monitor information related to cyclosporiasis and help keep our community informed.

At this time, Ventura County Public Health confirms there are no known local outbreaks or unusual number of cases of Cyclosporiasis in Ventura County.

Cyclosporiasis is a foodborne intestinal illness caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis, a microscopic parasite. People can become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite. Symptoms may include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Cyclospora has been associated with contaminated fresh produce, including leafy greens, fresh herbs, berries, and other fruits and vegetables. The parasite is not spread directly from person to person. Washing fresh produce thoroughly and following safe food-handling practices can help reduce the risk of foodborne illness.
