Ventura County Landmark No. 37: Hueneme Slough Site (aka Moranda Park)

Historical Background

W. B. Moranda Park was constructed over the former Hueneme Slough (lagoon or tidal basin) replenished by the ocean at high tide. High tides created this 8-acre body of water surrounded by cattails (tules) making it a haven for waterfowl. The Ventura County Railroad crossed the slough on a trestle on its way to Hueneme in 1938. In 1938 the Oxnard Harbor District filled in the slough with material dredged up to construct the new Port Hueneme Harbor. In subsequent years the site was landscaped as a park and named Moranda Park after a longtime Port Hueneme resident family. For another Moranda family related landmark, refer to Ventura County Landmark No. 86.
