Ventura County Landmark No. 83: Baker House
Historical Background
Built in 1898, this Queen Anne–style home was designed for Andrew “Jack” Baker, an adventurous rancher from Texas who later became Santa Paula’s first city marshal (Kelly, 2012). The home’s dramatic roofline, angled tower, and detailed woodwork reflect both Baker’s lively spirit and the skilled craftsmanship of the era (Kelly, 2012). Beyond its connection to Baker, the house’s architecture also reflects the creativity and bold style of the late‑Victorian era (Kelly, 2012).
Architectural Features
The house’s architectural features highlight the creativity of late‑Victorian design, blending bold shapes with refined details. Its tall tower, grouped classical columns, and decorative brackets help the home stand out as one of Santa Paula’s most distinctive historic landmarks (Ventura County Resource Management Agency, Planning Division, 2016).
Jack Baker & His Connection to the House
Andrew “Jack” Baker was a Texas‑born rancher known for his work in the oil fields, his skill with cattle, and his role managing the Santa Paula Horse & Cattle Company (Kelly, 2012). He owned a 200‑acre stock ranch and became Santa Paula’s first city marshal in 1902. The Baker House served not only as his family home but also as a symbol of his success and growing influence in early Santa Paula (Kelly, 2012). Although Baker’s story is rooted in the early days of Santa Paula, the house continues to play an important role in the city today.
Property Today
Today, the Baker House remains a well‑loved local landmark. Its preserved Victorian‑era features continue to add charm and character to Santa Paula’s older neighborhoods, making it an important piece of the city’s historic landscape (Ventura County Resource Management Agency, Planning Division, 2016).
