Ventura County Landmark No. 86: Gerberding/Moranda House
Historical Background
One of the few historic-age houses remaining in Port Hueneme, this residence was built in 1890 as a single story, four room dwelling. An addition was constructed in 1897, and the attic may have been converted into a second floor at that time. The interior was remodeled in 1928, and the residence underwent a complete restoration between 1981 and 1982 (Ventura County Resource Management Agency, Planning Division, 2016).
Its tall, narrow windows—described as “four high and two wide”—are double in height compared to their width, giving the home a distinctive appearance (Historical Marker Database, 2024). The house was built for Frederick Gerberding, the brother in law of prominent early Ventura County figure Thomas R. Bard, and was later home to the Lawrence Moranda family (Historical Marker Database, 2024). Mr. Moranda worked as a Southern Pacific railroad station agent and later served as justice of the peace, and Landmark No. 37, Moranda Park, was named in honor of the family (Ventura County Resource Management Agency, Planning Division, 2016).
Property Today
The Gerberding/Moranda House remains a recognizable historical residence in Port Hueneme, retaining the narrow window proportions and overall form that reflect its late 19th century origins (Ventura County Resource Management Agency, Planning Division, 2016). Recent restorations have preserved its early character while maintaining the updates completed in the late 20th century, allowing the structure to continue representing one of the few surviving historic dwellings in the community (Ventura County Resource Management Agency, Planning Division, 2016). The home also stands as a reminder of the Gerberding and Moranda families, both of whom played important roles in the development of Port Hueneme and the surrounding area.
