New Address/House Numbers
General Information
New Addresses
If you are building a new residence, adding a unit to your property, or need to change an existing address, Building and Safety assigns and maintains official house numbers for properties in the unincorporated areas of the county. Building and Safety has authority over all addresses in these areas, including addresses used for utility services.
New Buildings
- Single-family residences: An address is typically assigned based on your home’s primary access.
- Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Junior ADUs (JADUs): These receive their own independent address, based on the ADU’s own point of access. In some cases, an ADU’s address may be on a different street than the main residence. This includes conversions to existing structures, attached ADUs, and detached ADUs.
- Multi-family residences and apartment complexes: Units are assigned individual unit numbers as part of the overall building address.
- New subdivisions and developments: Addresses are reviewed and assigned in coordination with the approved tract or parcel map, often during the permitting process.
- New commercial buildings or individual tenant spaces: This includes businesses and shops.
Note: If you are building a new residence or structure, an address assignment is already included as part of your building permit application; no separate request is needed.
Utility Addresses
Building and Safety also assigns addresses for utility infrastructure. This includes items such as power poles, meter pedestals, and other utility infrastructure. These addresses support emergency response and allow utility providers and county staff to identify and locate infrastructure on a property or in the public right-of-way.
Vacant Parcels
Parcels within the unincorporated area of the county are generally not issued an address number. However, upon request and when necessary, an address may be issued for vacant parcels. If an address is needed, please submit an address request (see below for instruction).
How to Request an Address or Address Change
In cases where an address change is needed, Building and Safety may approve an address change when justified, and assign an appropriate address to replace the original address.
Fees
Fees apply to address assignment and change-of-address requests. Building and Safety current fee rates can be found on the Building and Safety Permit Fees, Payments, and Refunds page.
- Address fees for new buildings are already included with the permit fees.
- Address changes initiated by the county will have no fees.
- Address changes initiated by customer request will include fees.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there fees associated with the assignment of a new address or change of address?
Yes, new and change of address requests have different fee rates due to the work involved for each case. Refer to the Building and Safety Permit Fees, Payments, and Refunds page for up-to-date rates.
Does my ADU or JADU need a separate address from the main residence?
Yes, an accessory dwelling is required to have an independent address. If no sequential numbers are available, units will be assigned.
I never received an address for my ADU. Can an address be assigned to an existing ADU?
Yes, if the ADU was built with a permit and that information can be provided, an address will be assigned with no fee. If the ADU was built illegally, the structure needs to be legalized, which will involve an address assignment, with fees incorporated into the permitting.
I don’t like my assigned house numbers. Can I request to change them?
Situs number changes must be requested through Building and Safety. Not all requests may be fulfilled. There is no guarantee that requested numbers are feasible as address numbers need to align with the logical pattern established. Fees do apply for changes.
Do I need to fill out a new address request for a new residence I have submitted a permit application for?
No, a new address assignment is already a step in the permitting process for a new residence. Your new address will be released once your permit is issued. There’s no need to submit a separate request.
Do I need to send my new address to utilities or other agencies myself?
No, we handle new address submissions to the post offices, electric/gas/water companies, Assessors Office, and County Elections. Please hold on to a copy of your address notice if any complications arise with outside agencies.
